Muira Puama
aka Ptychopetalum olacoides · Marapuama
Amazonian root (Ptychopetalum olacoides) traditionally used for libido and cognitive support. Limited Western evidence.
Mechanism of action
Multiple bioactive compounds including alkaloids, lupeol, beta-sitosterol. Animal studies suggest cholinergic enhancement and dopaminergic activity. Human evidence is sparse — most clinical claims come from small French trials in the 1990s.
History
Muira puama has been used by Amazon indigenous peoples for centuries for vitality, sexual function, and nervous system complaints. Western interest accelerated in the 1990s through French studies (Waynberg) on libido and sexual function. The compound is unscheduled globally but the evidence base for specific claims is weak.
