Mexidol (Emoxypine)

Russian prescription antioxidant and anti-anxiety compound. Membrane stabiliser used for cerebrovascular and anxiety conditions.
Mechanism of action
Antioxidant through scavenging reactive oxygen species and stabilising membrane lipid bilayer. Modulates GABA receptor signalling for anxiolytic effect. Improves cerebral microcirculation. The combined mechanism produces anxiolytic and cognitive effects without sedation.
History
Mexidol was developed in the Soviet Union in the 1980s and is approved as a prescription drug in Russia and several former Soviet states for cerebrovascular disorders, anxiety, and alcohol withdrawal. Western availability is limited; the compound has a substantial Russian clinical literature but minimal Western evaluation. Unscheduled in some Western jurisdictions; not available as a regulated product.
