Lion's Mane and BDNF: What the Mushroom Actually Does

9 min read

Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) gained notoriety after Mori et al. (2009) showed cognitive improvement in adults with mild cognitive impairment.

The Mechanism

Hericenones (in fruiting body) and erinacines (in mycelium) stimulate Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) production. NGF supports neurogenesis, dendrite branching, and myelin maintenance.

The Human Evidence

Mori 2009 — 30 adults with mild cognitive impairment showed significantly improved cognitive scale scores after 16 weeks at 3 g/day. Nagano 2010 — reduced anxiety and depression after 4 weeks.

Newer trials are smaller and mixed. Effect size is modest.

Choose Your Extract Carefully

"Lion's Mane" supplements vary wildly. Many are mycelium grown on grain — the resulting powder is mostly starch, with trace bioactives.

What to look for: dual extract (water and ethanol), fruiting body specified, beta-glucan content disclosed (>20% by weight).

Dose

500–3,000 mg/day. Most users notice effects after 4–8 weeks of consistent use, not after one dose.

Pairing

Lion's Mane + Omega-3 + Alpha-GPC is a classic memory-supporting trio.
